The fastest bird in level flight is the White-throated Needletail (Hirundapus caudacutus), also known as the Spine-tailed Swift. This bird has been recorded reaching speeds of up to 171 km/h (106 mph) in level flight. The Common Swift (Apus apus) is another contender, capable of reaching speeds over 69 mph (110 km/h) in level flight. However, the White-throated Needletail holds the record for the highest speed in level flight among birds.
