The company stated that when the GNIS is updated, Google Maps will quickly reflect the new names for these locations. The decision to change the names back to Mount McKinley and the Gulf of America is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to revise geographic names. Former President Barack Obama had renamed Mount McKinley to Denali in 2015 as a gesture to honor Alaska Natives. The reversion to Mount McKinley marks a symbolic change, reigniting debates over the preservation of indigenous heritage versus historical traditions.
