Hopewell was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1891, from portions of Hopewell Township. Additional portions of the township were annexed in 1915, and the borough was reincorporated in 1924. The area has a rich history dating back to the colonial era when it was settled by European settlers in the late 17th century. The first settler in Hopewell Valley was Thomas Tindall, who purchased land in 1699. The borough was also the nearest town to the estate of Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, where their firstborn son was abducted in the infamous Lindbergh kidnapping case.
