Following school shootings, there is a significant increase in the use of prescription medications to treat mental health conditions. A study found that the use of antidepressants, antipsychotics, and antianxiety medications increased by over 25% among youth living near fatal school shootings. This surge in medication use is particularly notable among those who were not previously taking any psychotropic prescriptions. The peak in prescriptions occurs around three and a half years after the shooting, with elevated levels persisting for another year and a half.
