A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Maine on the morning of January 27, 2025. The epicenter was located approximately 7 miles southeast of York Harbor, Maine, at a depth of about 8 miles. The tremors were felt across a wide area, including parts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

Residents in Massachusetts reported a variety of experiences. In Boston, some described the shaking as a strong side-to-side motion lasting up to 15 seconds, while others mentioned a rumbling sound similar to a large truck or jet airplane passing by. Reports from other parts of Massachusetts included descriptions of houses shaking, rattling windows, and a feeling of intense shaking that lasted several seconds.

Despite the widespread perception of the earthquake, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) noted that while earthquakes are rare in the New England area, they are not entirely unheard of along the Atlantic Seaboard.
