A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Maine on the morning of January 27, 2025. The epicenter was located approximately 7 miles southeast of York Harbor, Maine, at a depth of about 8 miles. The tremors were felt across a wide area, including parts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.Residents in Massachusetts reported a variety of experiences. In Boston, some described the shaking as a strong side-to-side motion lasting up to 15 seconds, while others mentioned a rumbling sound similar to a large truck or jet airplane passing by.
