Park City Ski Patrol Strike: Demands for Better Wages and Working Conditions
Preview
The Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association is currently on strike, which began on the morning of December 27, 2024. The strike involves nearly 200 members who are protesting for better wages and working conditions. The union, which has been in negotiations with Vail Resorts since April 2024, has accused the company of bargaining in bad faith and violating the National Labor Relations Act.The union claims that Vail Resorts has not made a reasonable counteroffer on wages and benefits, despite a 50% wage increase over the past four seasons. The patrollers' current wage is $21 per hour, which they argue is below the industry standard. The union has filed multiple unfair labor practice charges against Vail Resorts, citing delays and refusals to provide necessary information during negotiations. In response to the strike, Vail Resorts has stated that they have made significant investments in the patrol team, including a 4% wage increase and a $1,600 equipment allowance. They have also prepared a Patrol Support Team to ensure the resort remains operational by bringing in experienced patrollers from other Vail-owned resorts. The union has set up a GoFundMe page to support the striking patrollers, which has raised over $32,000. They are also encouraging the community to support local businesses and boycott Vail-owned establishments during the strike.Despite the strike, Park City Mountain Resort remains open, with patrol leaders from Park City Mountain and other Vail resorts ensuring safety and operations. The union continues to express its readiness to negotiate and hopes that Vail Resorts will return to the table with a fair offer.
