Supreme Court Grants Tahir Hussain 12-Hour Daily Parole for Delhi Assembly Election Campaign
Supreme Court Grants Tahir Hussain 12-Hour Daily Parole for Delhi Assembly Election Campaign
The Supreme Court has granted custody parole to Tahir Hussain, allowing him to come out of jail for 12 hours daily from January 29 until February 3, 2025. This decision is specific to his campaign for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Hussain, a key accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, will be permitted to campaign for the Mustafabad constituency as a candidate of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). However, there are several conditions attached to this parole:
Expenses: Hussain will bear all expenses related to his custody, including those for two police personnel, the jail van, and the escort vehicle. He has been directed to make an advance deposit of approximately ₹2 lakh per day for two days, followed by similar payments for the remaining period.
Campaign Activities: While campaigning, Hussain can visit his party office and hold meetings with voters within the constituency. However, he must comply with the undertakings given to the court and follow the conditions set for his release.
This decision comes after Hussain's initial request for interim bail was denied by the Delhi High Court, which instead granted him custody parole to file his nomination papers. The Supreme Court's decision is influenced by the urgency of the election campaign and the limited time remaining for canvassing.
