A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the Shigatse City of the Tibet Autonomous Region on Tuesday at 9:05 am, causing significant damage and loss of life. The quake, which had a depth of 10 kilometers, resulted in the deaths of 126 people, injuries to over 188 others, and the collapse of 3,609 homes. The affected area is characterized by its high altitude and freezing temperatures, making the situation particularly dire for the survivors. In response to the disaster, various local car companies have stepped up to provide aid. Nio, Li Auto, and BYD, among others, have made substantial donations to support relief efforts. Nio, along with the Nio Users Foundation, donated RMB 1 million ($136,000) to provide emergency relief supplies and post-disaster reconstruction. Li Auto donated RMB 5 million to the China Charity Federation, and BYD's Charity Foundation donated RMB 10 million for similar purposes.Rescue operations are ongoing, with more than 3,000 rescuers deployed to search for survivors and provide assistance. The Chinese government has also allocated 100 million yuan ($13.6 million) for disaster relief and has dispatched over 22,000 disaster relief items, including cotton tents, coats, quilts, and folding beds, to the affected areas. The arrival of tents is a critical part of the relief efforts, providing essential shelter for the survivors in the harsh winter conditions. These tents are being used to house the displaced individuals and offer them some protection from the freezing temperatures and high-altitude winds. The earthquake has also had a significant impact beyond Tibet, with tremors felt in parts of Nepal and India. In Nepal, people were seen evacuating their homes due to the strong shaking. The disaster highlights the seismic activity in the region, which has a history of large earthquakes due to its location near the India and Eurasia plate boundary.
