The first international commercial flight to Syria since the fall of Bashar Assad's government has landed in Damascus. This significant event marks a new beginning for Syria's aviation industry, which had been suspended following the collapse of Assad's regime on December 8, 2024. The flight, operated by Syrian Airlines, departed from Damascus at around 11:45 am local time and landed in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. This journey is the first international commercial flight from Damascus since the ouster of Assad by Islamist-led rebels last month. The resumption of flights is seen as a step towards normalcy and reconnection with the international community. Qatar Airways has announced the resumption of three weekly flights to Damascus starting from January 7, 2025, emphasizing the importance of meeting all necessary safety, security, and operational standards. This development is particularly notable as Qatar was a significant backer of the armed rebellion against Assad and had not renewed ties with Syria despite its return to the Arab diplomatic fold in 2023.The restart of international flights is also expected to have broader implications for the region's aviation landscape. The resumption of flights by Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines could signal a gradual return of other international carriers, potentially boosting economic recovery and facilitating the return of international aid and diplomatic missions to Syria. However, the U.S. State Department continues to advise against travel to Syria due to ongoing risks of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict. Despite these warnings, the return of commercial flights represents a hopeful sign for Syria's future, indicating progress towards stability and international reintegration.
